We currently are trying to put our budget together fully after paying a lot of debt off just today with our tax refund. We still have some money left over and all 3 of my girls need spring/summer clothes badly. My twins will be one in march and I have a 3 year old also. This will be my first time buying all three of them basically a full wardrobe at one time (hopefully by bugeting we won’t run into this issue again). That being said, I really don’t know how much to set aside for each of the girls for this one large shopping trip. My twins are starting to walk so i will also need to buy them shoes, along with my 3 year old who has outgrown most of her shoes. I usually shop at target, old navy and try to find things at Once upon a child also. What do you ladies think I should budget to spend on this? Sorry if this is a silly question but since having the twins it is so much harder for me to try to figure all of this out.
Also, what do you all usually put aside in your budget monthly for new clothes? DH will need new work shoes soon and since having the twins and losing some weight I will also need new clothes (not really focusing on this right now though until I get the kids taken care of)
Last year we lumped our clothing budget together, but after answering a post on here about how much we spent on each person, I realized dh was taking the majority of our clothing budget!! this year it’s separated out – me, dh, and the boys. the big shopping trip, I would first make a list of what I have. guessing you have some hand me downs for the twins? I make a list of what I need – I usually plan for 10 t-shirts (short for summer, long for winter), 5ish pairs of pants, 4 pj’s, and then socks and underwear. also usually do a couple “nice” (collared) shirts for parties, etc. boys, only two pairs of shoes are really needed – in the summer they’re crocs and sneakers,CHRISTIAN SHOES, in the winter boots and sneakers. needs two pairs of shoes for school, both sneakers – black and white. only needs sneakers since he doesn’t wear a uniform yet. you have your list, start internet shopping. an idea of where you want to go and your top price you’ll pay. go to the stores and figure it out. like old navy’s t-shirts, but they rarely have the right size/color in the store, so we do that shopping online when they offer free shipping. I know we’ll always need those, air max 90 black I keep an eye throughout the year on their clearance/sales and stock up on the next size when they’re cheap. far as $ amount,CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN FLAT SHOES, I think that’s entirely dependent on your budget. think the guideline is 2-7% of your income (from here)
Thanks for the advice. I don;t have any hand me downs for the twins until 18month clothes for ODD because I gave everything she had away prior to finding out I was pregnant again but after that point I will have quite a bit that I can use of ODD’s clothing for them. I do like seeing the amount of shirts etc that you buy because it gives me an idea of what i will need. I was really bad with ODD about buying a LOT of clothes but now that I went from 1 to 3 kids it isn’t really possible to do that nor do I need to so I am just trying to find a good balance. I have been looking quiet a bit today at target and old navy online. both of those stores are 2 hours away from us so when we go we have always done one big shopping trip. I also do some online shopping also but only when i can get free shippping. I find I do best to get the kids core wardrobes at Target or somewhere similar, then fill in gaps at thrift stores. Like, for example, I got DS 3 some khaki, jean, and navy shorts at Target for like 4.50 a piece on sale, some underwear, socks, new tennis shoes, clearance pajamas, etc., All these things were like $48 total, then I went to two thrift stores and scored a nice fleece jacket that will fit him in fall, several pairs of shorts, tops, pants for church, dress shoes and play shoes for $17. So, for like $68 I am done with his wardrobe until late summer when it is time to shop for fall. I don’t do a set budget, because I never know how much I will have to spend, it varies according to what I can find first at thrift stores and yard sales. I think the key is to not overbuy and have too many outfits, and then to just do the best you can on the shopping. I don’t like to shop a lot for clothes, the less I am in the stores the better, air max women especially since it is such a temptation to buy cute kids clothes that aren’t even always needed.
thanks everyone! We don’t have any thrift stores in my city but i will definately be looking there once we go shopping tomorrow. I never even knew about places like once upon a child or rekid until i got pregnant with the twins but I have found so many cute things at those places since finding out about them but I just hate that all of these stores are a two hour drive from where I live. So we will just take my ODD with us and leave the twins with my grandma and just make a full day of it to make sure we shop around for low prices. As far as the 18 month stuff fitting them right now, I may be able to make do of the shirts but they are still small and even 12 months is too big. the end of summer though they should be able to wear some of her things that are 18 months. going to try my best to spend as little mulberry bags uk as possible because we are still on a pretty tight budget but set aside money to make sure we could buy their clothes.
I am also a huge fan of Once Upon a Child (for buying, not so much for selling stuff back). Last time I went in there I bought pair of blue jeans, 2 pair of khaki pants, 3 pairs of sweatpants with matching jackets, 4 t-shirts, and cheap nike air max 90 3 pair of fleece footed PJs for $37. Then I went to Target and bought some white long sleeved onesies and some socks and that $55 day has lasted us from 6mo – 12mo, and I’m just now at the point celine tote bag where I need to go and buy him some spring/summer clothes, so I’m assuming another $60 or so should get me through until next fall (fingers crossed)
I’d suggest going through it all and really assess if you need 3 complete new wardrobes. You probably have some tshirts and dresses that will still work, or some things from last year for your 3yo that still fit. It just got warm here and I put DD in some of last years shorts and they fit fine. I may go spend at most $50 because she’s outgrown a lot and I’m having to do laundry too often, or I’ll buy a stack of $4 solid cotton shorts when it gets hot, but I’ve never gone out and bought all new clothes at one time. nice having girls because you can dresses and layer a ls shirt and tights under them in the winter then still have them for summer. short dresses can be turned into tunics with some leggings. I like to buy some cheap basic solid pieces for day to day play, and just a few nicer outfits. I buy big whenever possible. is a 2T, but lately I can buy 3T shirts and dresses most styles and they look fine, just a little long. hold the two sizes up and see how close they are, lol. Same with PJs,CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN WEDGES, I bought 3T last summer and they fit if I just cuffed the legs, and I have for this summer.
For shoes, DD one pair of shoes at a time. Actually I buy in half sizes, so two will fit at once. Right now she has a brown pair of sneakers in a 7 and a pink pair in a 7.5 and it’s really plenty. you them some clothes for their birthdays? got a TON of clothes for her birthday (also in march), lots of cute and spring things, I didn’t have to buy any for a while.
I decide how many outfits my dc need, and that is based on how often I do laundry. Since I do laundry every day, my dc only need five daily wear outfits and 1 or 2 nicer outfits for church and other outings. I don’t bother with thrift shops anymore since it can take forever and too many stores try to piece together enough shop celine clothing to make a trip worth it. Instead, I go to Target and buy their mix-and-match girl clothes. Toddler pieces are usually $3/item for shirts and shorts. So, if I need 5 shirts and shorts, it would cost $30/child. Add a couple dresses, pairs of sandals (one nice, one play), and one swim suit and I’m done. If I buy the dresses large enough, they can be worn through two seasons. If you have any concerns about your own health or the health of your child, you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional.
